Tank Ring

The principle of securing a tank bag using a tank ring (also known as a mounting ring or Tanklock system) is one of the most modern and convenient ways to attach a tank bag to a motorcycle. This method is highly popular because it combines maximum security with fast, effortless handling.

How It Works The system relies on two main components:

  • Mounting Ring (Tank Ring): This bike-specific ring attaches directly around the fuel filler cap using the existing factory bolt points.

  • Bag Mechanism: The bottom of the tank bag features a matching lock flange that snaps onto the tank ring.

How to Use the Tank Bag:

  • Attachment: Simply position the tank bag over the fuel cap and press down gently until you hear a firm click.

  • Detachment: To remove the bag, pull the release lever or strap (depending on the manufacturer). The bag unlocks instantly, taking just a second.

Advantages of Tank Rings Over Other Systems:

  • Enhanced Security: The tank bag remains firmly locked in place. It cannot shift or detach, even at high speeds or during aggressive riding.

  • Paintwork Protection: Because the bag hovers slightly above the fuel tank, it never touches the paint. This eliminates scratching caused by trapped dust or grit—a common issue with magnetic and strap-on bags.

  • Unmatched Convenience: Bypassing straps or heavy magnets makes refueling effortless and allows you to quickly detach the bag to carry it with you.

  • Rock-Solid Stability: The fixed locking mechanism prevents sway or movement, keeping the bag stable even when leaning into corners.

Considerations:

  • Vehicle Compatibility: The mounting ring is not universal. You must select a ring pattern specifically designed for your motorcycle's fuel cap bolt pattern and configuration.

  • Cost: Tank ring systems generally require a higher upfront investment than basic strap or magnet setups, though riders view this as a worthwhile trade-off for convenience and paint preservation.

Leading manufacturers using this quick-lock principle include Givi (Tanklock system) and SW-Motech (PRO/EVO systems).
