Engine Oil and Filter Change Procedure for BMW R1200GS 2010:
-
Warm up the engine by taking a short ride or letting it idle (the oil drains better).
-
Place the motorcycle on its centerstand and check its stability.
-
Prepare new oil fill (approx. 4.0 l, semi-synthetic / fully synthetic oil 20W-50 or 10W-40 per manual), oil filter (e.g., Mahle OC 306 / BMW 11 42 7 673 541), new drain plug sealing ring, and an oil filter wrench.
-
Place a suitable drain pan under the engine for the used oil.
-
Loosen the drain plug at the bottom of the engine (8 mm Allen key) and allow the oil to drain.
-
Unscrew the oil filter using a special wrench (located at the bottom front of the engine) and dispose of the old filter.
-
Coat the seal of the new filter with clean oil before installation. Screw on the new filter by hand only (tighten gently – until contact, then another 3/4 turn).
-
Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing ring and torque to 32 Nm.
-
Pour in fresh oil – approx. 3.75 l through the filler opening (upper right side of the engine).
-
Start the engine for a few minutes to circulate the oil and check the oil level via sight glass/dipstick (motorcycle level, engine rested briefly).
-
Top up oil as needed between min–max marks, check all connections for leaks.
-
Dispose of old oil and filter environmentally.
Air Filter Replacement Procedure:
-
Place the motorcycle on its stand and ensure stability.
-
Remove the seat and, if necessary, the side plastic covers around the airbox area (usually under the tank).
-
Locate the airbox cover – located between the cylinder heads and under the tank.
-
Unscrew the airbox cover screws (usually Torx T25) and remove the cover.
-
Remove the old air filter – simply pull it out of its housing.
-
Check airbox cleanliness, wipe away any dirt with a dry cloth or vacuum gently.
-
Insert the new air filter – seated correctly into the sealing groove in the airbox.
-
Close the airbox with the cover and secure with screws.
-
Reinstall all removed parts – plastic covers and seat.
-
Recommended intervals: every 20,000 km, or more frequently in dusty environments.
-
Filter type: original BMW or equivalent aftermarket (e.g., Mahle, K&N, HifloFiltro).
The entire job takes only a few minutes and requires no special tools, just a Torx key.
Brake Fluid Replacement Procedure:
-
Prepare: DOT4 brake fluid, a hose, a container for old fluid, and a wrench for bleeder valves.
-
Cover surrounding plastics – brake fluid is aggressive and can damage paintwork.
-
Open the brake fluid reservoir cap (front or rear depending on which one you are servicing).
-
Siphon out old fluid from the reservoir using a syringe or hose.
-
Top up with fresh DOT4 fluid into the reservoir (maximum level).
-
Attach the hose to the brake caliper bleeder valve, submerge the other end into a container.
-
Loosen the bleeder valve by 0.5 turns.
-
Pump the brake lever (front)/pedal (rear) – briefly open the valve while pressing the lever, old fluid flows out, close the valve while holding the lever, then release the lever.
-
Repeat process until only clean fluid flows and there are no bubbles in the tube. Continuously refill fluid in the reservoir!
-
Tighten the valve, close the reservoir, and clean up fluid residues.
-
Repeat the same for the rear brake.
-
Recommendation: Pay special attention to motorcycles with ABS; complete bleeding of the system should occasionally be entrusted to a service center.
-
Ensure fluid level never drops below minimum.
Final Drive (Cardan) Oil Change Procedure for BMW R1200GS 2010:
-
Prepare: gear oil (approx. 180 ml 75W-90 API GL-5), a clean hose, a syringe/filling kit, wrenches (8 mm Allen key, 19 mm wrench), container for used oil, and a new sealing ring if necessary.
-
Warm up motorcycle with a short ride (oil drains better).
-
Place motorcycle on centerstand and secure it.
-
Loosen upper filler plug on final drive (8 mm Allen key).
-
Place a container for used oil underneath final drive.
-
Loosen bottom drain plug (19 mm wrench), let oil drip out for a few minutes.
-
Clean plugs and mating surfaces, replace gaskets if necessary.
-
Screw drain plug back in (recommended tightening torque approx. 30 Nm).
-
Pour new oil (180 ml) into the top hole using a syringe or hose.
-
Screw filler plug back in (recommended tightening torque approx. 30 Nm).
-
Check all joints for leaks and clean off any oil residue.
-
Dispose of used oil environmentally.
Recommended replacement interval: every 20,000 km or once every 2 years.
Spark Plug Replacement Procedure for BMW R1200GS 2010 (Air-Cooled, Boxer):
-
Prepare new spark plugs.
-
Remove side plastic covers from cylinder heads (if fitted).
-
Carefully pull off spark plug caps (use a special hook, plastic puller tool, or strong cord; never pull by the wire).
-
Blow out or clean area around the spark plug with compressed air to prevent dirt from entering the engine.
-
Unscrew old spark plug using a spark plug socket – recommended size is 16 mm.
-
Check threads in the cylinder head, optionally apply a light coat of anti-seize paste to the new spark plug threads.
-
Thread new spark plug by hand first, then tighten carefully – tightening torque is 20 Nm.
-
Reattach spark plug cap and ensure it sits firmly on the plug.
-
Repeat procedure for all cylinders (this model uses 2 spark plugs per cylinder, total of 4 spark plugs).
-
Reinstall cylinder head covers.
