Comparative test of battery-powered air compressors
Maintaining the correct tyre pressure is essential for every motorcyclist’s safety, especially when travelling long distances. On the road, however, you will often find yourself in situations where no air pump or workshop facilities are available. This is where portable battery-powered compressors come in, becoming an increasingly popular part of adventure touring equipment. In this article, we look at the options available from myenduro.cz.
HLP Air Pump Mini with a 4000 mAh battery
The HLP Air Pump Mini features an integrated 4000 mAh battery. This compressor is designed as a versatile maintenance tool for travellers. Its main advantage is its compact size, which means it takes up almost no space in your motorcycle luggage. The power bank function also allows you to charge a mobile phone or navigation device in an emergency — a welcome bonus on longer expeditions.
Higher capacity: HLP Air Pump Mini 5400 mAh
For users who need a larger energy reserve, HLP offers a version with a 5400 mAh battery. It follows the same design concept as the lower-capacity model, but its larger battery provides longer operation on a single charge. It retains the same versatility, making it a reliable companion for maintaining tyre pressure wherever you are.
Interphone Air Pump Mini: a compact maintenance solution
Interphone’s Air Pump Mini focuses primarily on ease of use and portability. This compressor is designed as a versatile tool for quick maintenance. Its dimensions make it easy to store in a tank bag or under the motorcycle seat. It is an ideal choice for riders who prefer minimalist equipment without compromising on functionality when carrying out maintenance on the road.
Interphone Smart Air Pump for modern travellers
The Interphone Smart Air Pump adds intelligent features to the basic version, making it easier to set the required pressure. Its digital interface gives the user a clear overview of the current inflation pressure. Like the other models in our range, this compressor can be used with various types of motorcycle tyres, making it a highly versatile tool for everyday maintenance and emergencies alike.
Nomad Air: performance and versatility
Nomad Air provides a comprehensive solution for your maintenance kit. This compressor offers a maximum pressure of 10 bar, which is more than sufficient for most motorcycle tyres. In addition to inflation, it features a power bank and an integrated LED torch. This combination of lighting and a compressor is particularly valuable when repairing tyres in poor visibility or at night, when working on a wheel without a light is very difficult.
In our test, we compared the inflation of a 130/80 R17 motorcycle tyre to a pressure of 2.4 bar. The results showed that battery capacity alone is not necessarily the most important parameter. Compressor design, charging speed and overall efficiency also matter.
The clear winner is the Nomad Air mini 10 bar, which is by far the fastest and can pump the greatest volume of air on a single charge. Despite having the lowest manufacturer-stated battery capacity (2.5 Ah – 27.75 Wh), it managed to inflate the 130/80 R17 tyre almost 8 times! It is also very quiet and can be charged using a modern USB-C/USB-C cable. Cheaper models require a USB-A/USB-C cable because they cannot communicate with an advanced USB-C port at the other end. Charging is therefore slower as well. The drawbacks are the highest price and probably the lowest capacity when used as a power bank. However, all these compressors are suitable as power banks only in an emergency, as their batteries often cannot fully charge a modern phone even once.
Test results
- Interphone Smart Air pump (4000 mAh): can inflate the tyre 3 full times, with a fourth inflation reaching approximately halfway — around 1.4 bar. One inflation takes approximately 5.5 minutes.
- Interphone Air Pump Mini (3150 mAh): despite its smaller battery, it manages the same number of inflations — 3 full times and a fourth approximately halfway. One inflation takes just under 4 minutes.
- HLP Air Pump Mini cordless compressor 4000 mAh: manages 3 full inflations, with a fourth reaching approximately 1.5 bar. One inflation takes around 4 minutes 47 seconds. It can be charged using a USB-A/USB-C cable.
- HLP Air Pump Mini cordless compressor 5400 mAh: manages up to 6 full inflations, with the fourth reaching approximately 0.7 bar. One inflation takes around 4 minutes 14 seconds. Charging is via a USB-A/USB-C cable.
- Nomad Air mini compressor 10 bar with a 2500 mAh battery: in the test, it managed 7 full tyre inflations, followed by another inflation to approximately 1.8 bar. One inflation takes just 2 minutes 30 seconds. It also supports USB-C/USB-C charging.
- Kappa Air Pump mini with a 4000 mAh battery inflates the tyre in 3:55 and manages 3 inflations.
Nomad Air was the fastest, while Nomad Air and HLP 5400 mAh offered the longest battery life. The Interphone Smart Air pump and Air Pump Mini delivered similar overall battery endurance in this particular test, despite their different battery capacities.
Equipment and features
Interphone Smart Air pump (4000 mAh) – a versatile helper
The Smart Air pump has a larger body and offers more features than the compact Mini version:
- An integrated torch makes repairing a puncture at night easier and also serves as an emergency light at the campsite.
- A power bank with a USB-A output allows you to partially recharge a phone or navigation device. However, this is a supplementary function, so it is advisable to leave enough energy for inflation itself.
- A larger LCD display shows the target and current pressure simultaneously.
- The battery level indicator is less precise — it uses colours and flashing signals instead of four bars.
Interphone Air Pump Mini (3150 mAh) – compact and quiet
The Air Pump Mini focuses primarily on small dimensions, low weight and a more comfortable noise level.
- Quiet operation is practical when inflating tyres at a campsite, in a garage or in a residential area.
- A compact design makes it easy to store under the seat or in a smaller bag.
- It has neither a torch nor a power bank function, which is the trade-off for its simpler and lighter design.
- In the test, it completed one inflation in approximately 3 minutes 55 seconds.
HLP Air Pump Mini 4000 mAh – a compact compromise
The HLP Air Pump Mini 4000 mAh offers a compact design and practical battery capacity. In the test, it managed three full inflations and a fourth partial inflation. It can be charged using a USB-A/USB-C cable.
HLP Air Pump Mini 5400 mAh – a focus on endurance
If the number of inflations per charge is your main priority, the HLP 5400 mAh is an interesting option. It managed six full inflations in our test. It charges via a USB-A/USB-C cable.
Nomad Air mini 10 bar – the fastest, quietest and longest-lasting in the test
Nomad Air impressed with its combination of a small battery, high speed and very good endurance. In the test, it managed seven full inflations followed by another partial inflation. One inflation took approximately 2 minutes 30 seconds. This clearly demonstrates how efficient its compressor is.
Another advantage is the option to charge it using a modern USB-C/USB-C cable. Its features also include a power bank and an LED torch.
Kappa mini Air Pump – standard performance, relatively quiet, also charges from USB-C, power bank function (USB-A output), torch. Limited battery endurance: it completed 3 inflations with no capacity left.
