Rackless systems for enduro: no frame, yet securely in place

A “Reckless”, or rackless, system is a soft luggage solution that carries side and rear luggage without traditional metal pannier racks. Instead of side racks, it relies on a rigid centre plate, straps and shaped “holsters” alongside the seat; the advantages include lower weight, a narrower motorcycle profile and quicker installation.

Where the concept came from

Mosko Moto and its Reckless range can rightfully be considered pioneers of the modern category of secure rackless systems. The range transformed the traditional touring motorcycle setup — two panniers and a top case — into three waterproof bags mounted on a rigid composite base, without the motorcycle needing a side frame or pannier racks.

Mosko Moto Reckless gained popularity mainly because it was more than just bags strapped to the pillion seat. The system featured a rigid support plate, adjustable side “legs”, durable dry bag holsters and a modular layout; later versions allow quick removal of the bags and use of the rear section on its own.

Kriega introduced a related but different approach with its Overlander-S / OS range. Its OS-PLATFORM and OS-BASE allow soft side bags to be mounted without full metal pannier racks, but the concept relies more on a modular platform and structured side bags than on a single large “reckless” base.

Lone Rider offers a similar soft luggage solution for adventure and enduro riding, providing further evidence that rackless systems have long since moved beyond niche experimentation to become a category of equipment in their own right. However, exactly who deserves credit for the concept remains debatable: Mosko Moto popularised the name and current form of “Reckless”, while Kriega developed a strong alternative platform-based philosophy.

Why enduro riders want it

On enduro and lighter adventure motorcycles, every kilogram and every centimetre of width matters. A rackless system saves weight compared with metal racks and panniers, reduces overall width off-road and lowers the risk of snagging on a tree trunk or rock, or during a fall.

Another advantage is versatility. The same system can often be transferred between several motorcycles, which is useful for riders who alternate between a heavier adventure touring bike and a lighter machine, or rent motorcycles abroad.

Where the limitations lie

Rackless is not automatically better than panniers. Stability depends on correct strap tension, protection of the exhaust and plastics, weight distribution and how well the system sits against the motorcycle. Long-term use can cause abrasion on the plastics and seat, making protective film, rubber pads and regular strap tension checks worthwhile.

For particularly demanding rally stages, heavy luggage loads or repeated falls, rigid racks and panniers may still be the more sensible choice. A rackless system is ideal for lighter travel, bikepacking, TET, weekend trips and situations where low weight and quick installation are the priorities.
